Abstract

Why should any literature of Hong Kong be in English given that the language — for a huge majority of the population — is, in fact, Chinese?  From the time she first started writing, Xu Xi has faced this challenge as one who writes, in English, and is undeniably a Hong Kong writer.  Her experience influences what she wants believes she can and must write vis à vis her birth city and long-time home.  She will draw on recent and current writing on “The Problem on English” in both contemporary and Hong Kong literature, as well as how it shapes her forthcoming book Horizon Hong Kong: Selected Stories, scheduled for release this July by Gaudy Boy, New York.

Bio

Xu Xi 許素細 is one of Hong Kong’s leading English writers. Author of sixteen books and editor of four anthologies of Hong Kong writing, she held the Jenks Chair in Contemporary Letters at the College of the Holy Cross in Massachusetts, was writer-in-residence at Arizona State University, City University of Hong Kong, University of Iowa, and directed two international MFA’s in creative writing.  Earlier, she held management positions at The Asian Wall Street Journal,Federal Express, Pinkerton’s.  A diehard transnational, she now lives between New York and the rest of the world. www.xuxiwriter.com
