Admissions Requirements
In addition to the general requirements of the Graduate School (http://www.gs.cuhk.edu.hk), applicants should
- normally possess an honours degree in English, Applied Linguistics or a language-related field OR possess a good honours degree in subjects other than English;
- submit an 800-word research proposal; and
- satisfy the Graduate Panel with a strong interest and sound knowledge in Applied English Linguistics.
Preference will be given to applicants who
- have an honours degree taken from English-mediated programme;
- have a year or more of relevant professional experience;
Shortlisted applicants will be invited to an interview, which aims to assess their linguistic abilities and academic competence in Applied English Linguistics.
Application Procedures
Applicants must submit the following documents through the Online Application System by the deadline:
Academic / Professional Certificates
For all applicants: Both graduation and professional qualification certificates.
For degrees obtained from Chinese Mainland:
a) Both degree (學位證書) and graduation (畢業證書) certificates printed in Chinese.
b) A valid Online Verification Reports of Higher Education Qualification Certificates (教育部學歷證書電子註冊備案表) and Degree Certificates (中國高等教育學位在線驗證報告) issued from CHESICC for Mainland China degrees.
Official Transcripts and Grading Schemes
• All copies of official transcripts and grading schemes with explanatory notes for all tertiary education.
• Transcripts must bear official seal; unofficial or improper letterhead documents will not be accepted.
• Non-English/Chinese transcripts require certified English translation.
• CUHK graduates can submit photocopies of transcripts (excluding CUHK (Shenzhen)). The University reserves the right to require an original copy.
The University requires applicants to provide verification reports of the qualification obtained.
English Language Proficiency Requirements
Submit one of the following:
1. A copy of graduation certificate issued by a university in Hong Kong; or
2. A certifying letter issued by the Registry of the university confirming the medium of instruction of your degree programme was English; or
3. An official score report of TOEFL^ (share result with “0812 – The Chinese University of Hong Kong”), or IELTS (Academic)^ (share result with “The Chinese University of Hong Kong – Graduate School” or GMAT (Verbal)^; or
4. Certification of Results of the English Language subject in Hong Kong Advanced Level Examination (AS Level), or Hong Kong Higher Level Examination, or Hong Kong Diploma of Secondary Education Examination provided by Hong Kong Examinations and Assessment Authority; or
5. Certified true copy* of Statement of Results/report of the English Language subject in General Certificate of Education (GCE) A-level or AS-level/CUHK Matriculation Examination.
^TOEFL and IELTS scores are considered valid for two years from the test date. GMAT scores are considered valid for five years from the test date.
*The certified true copy must be issued by the official organisation or relevant test organisation. The University may require applicants to provide the original documents for verification.

Remarks:
1. We only accept scanned A4-size documents (in PDF format), photo taken from your mobile device will not be accepted. Please note that we do not accept low resolution or unclear documents.
2. Please DO NOT mail the uploaded supporting documents to us at application stage.
3. The Selection Committee of the English Division will start viewing applications right after the application deadline. Selected applicants may be invited for an interview. Successful applications will be recommended to Graduate School for admission. Applicants may login Graduate School’s Admission System and check your application results in the section of “View Application Results”.
Verification of Documents
To step up measures against fraudulent academic qualifications, with effect from the 2025-26 admission exercise, a positive result on the verification of students’ mainland/overseas academic qualifications must be obtained from relevant institutions/ authorities no later than one month before commencement of studies, failing which the student concerned may be required to defer admission to the next term. The onus of producing such proof lies with the student. If the academic records or qualifications submitted by an applicant are verified as false, the offer will be rescinded and all fees paid will be forfeited.
In this effect, applicants are required to complete an Authorization Form for the University to verify their academic qualifications when submitting online applications. The programme staff may further contact the applicants to proceed with applying for academic verification from a third-party organization, e.g., Chinese Service Center for Scholarly Exchange (CSCSE).
Moreover, the University may require applicants to submit additional information or documentary proof if deemed necessary. All documents submitted will not be returned. If the application is unsuccessful, all documents will be destroyed. Applicants are required to provide true, accurate and complete information in support of their applications. Any misrepresentation in the documents and information provided will result in disqualification of their applications and subsequent enrolments in the University.

Notes:
- Students would be considered a non-local student if he/she is a holder of the following documents issued by the Immigration Department of the HKSAR:
i) Student visa/entry permit; or
ii) Visa/entry permit under the Immigration Arrangement for Non-local Graduates; or
iii) Dependant visa/entry permit who were 18 years old or above when he/she was issued with such visa/entry - During the student’s normative study period.
- Only applicants who have got an admission offer, accepted the offer and settled the deposit will be considered for the Scheme.
- Only candidates selected for award and enrolled in the concerned programme namely, registered as a student at the University are eligible to receive the scholarship.
- All fees paid are non-refundable and non-transferable.
