The Faculty of Arts at CUHK admits undergraduates directly into its departments. This means that undergraduate students are English majors right from the beginning and are immersed into the culture of the department. This also means that orientation activities, alumni talks and other student activities are organised at the departmental level and this would facilitate interaction between students and teachers in the department.

There are 3 components to the curriculum:

1. CENG: Communications for English Majors
2. AEL: Applied English Linguistics
3. ELS: English Literary Studies

English majors take compulsory courses in each of these three components, after which they are free to decide on whether they wish to take courses in ELS, AEL, or both.

95% of our students have never taken literature courses prior to enrolling into the programme. Your professors know this and you will be introduced to basic concepts and techniques of literary study during your first year.

Depending on the nature of the course, there are traditional lecture-plus-tutorial formats as well as seminars and workshops where a certain degree of interactive participation is involved. Depending on the nature of the course, assessment is based on various combinations of exams / coursework / essays / projects / presentations.

There is the ENGE2960 The World in English: The Oxford Summer Programme. Oxford tutors will conduct 4 hours of face-to-face teaching a day for 5 days a week for about 3 weeks. Students will spend some evenings and weekend days in excursions to London and Stratford for plays and other cultural sites.
